Castlevania: AoS 001 - Creaking Skull

Check the first first (000 - Introduction) for general information about this playthrough.

00:00 - In the starting cutscene, you saw Soma kill a winged skeleton and collect its soul. Souls are power-ups and magic in this game. You typically find them randomly from slain monsters but some candlebras also hold them. There are four types; red (bullet), blue (guardian), yellow (enchanted), and grey (ability). The flying skeleton soul is a bullet soul, which is typically a projectile or some sort of “active” attack skill.

0:39 - Here we collect our first ability soul, Grave Keeper. This lets us quickly dodge backwards. Ability souls are always active and can be used at no cost simply by pressing their input combination (L, in this case).

0:43 - We encounter the first save room. Save rooms let you save your game (surprise, surprise) and will completely restore your HP & MP. I try not to get hit a lot so hopefully we won’t have to abuse this feature too much.

1:22 - These doors mark rooms with bosses in them. Obviously you can’t go back out until the boss is defeated so make sure you’re prepared before you enter one. We’re up against the Creaking Skull this time and he’s super easy. He has two attacks: a fireball with a long and obvious charge-up and a good old fashion swing of his club. Duck under, dash over, or just strike the fireball to dissipate it and backdash a couple of times to avoid the club. You can also use the flying skeleton’s soul (which, if timed properly, will hit him 2-3 times) but he’s so easy I just used the short sword.

1:45 - After every boss battle, you get an orb that restores you HP & MP.

1:56 - Breaking this hidden wall nets me a Mind Up, which restores MP.

2:24 - Our first guardian soul, Flying Armor. It lets us slow our falling speed so we can glide to previously unaccessable platforms. It sounds nice but it’s pretty useless. You only need it in two or three places total.

3:47 - If you go up here, you can find some superior armor and a couple of potions. I ignored them because I tend to not use potions or armor that much so I didn’t think about it at the time but I’ll pick them up later.
